Webber needs to hit top gear

SITTING in fifth place with just seven races remaining in this year's Formula One championship, Mark Webber knows he needs to hit top gear right now.

And that doesn't mean starting in tomorrow's Singapore Grand Prix. It means starting with today's qualifying session.

The Aussie said he and Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel had been very disappointed with their recent performances in qualifying.

"Lately we almost always finish qualifying unsatisfied. So yes, we are disappointed with our qualifying performance - but, if we had the answers we would fix them straightaway," Webber said. "There is no silver bullet. There is no such thing as one switch and then all of a sudden we are back on the front row. The success that we had in the last two years was not done by moving a switch either - it was a case of steadily getting there. At the moment we are not strong in qualifying, but we have the chance to turn that around."

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonzo leads the driver's championship on 192 points from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton on 142 and Kimi Raikkonen from Lotus on 141.
