Fraser Coast singles are a romantic bunch online

THE Fraser Coast is one of the romance capitals of Australia.

Pulling back the covers on the region's online dating habits, the Chronicle reveals 26% of the region's Oasis.com.au members consider themselves "very romantic".

It's the highest percentage in Australia, shared only with Rockhampton and Lismore in New South Wales.

Warwick, with 13%, and Mackay, with 18%, have the country's lowest romance ratings.

Dating site RSVP says 51% of its coast members are female and 49% are male.

According to Oasis, music is the top interest of the district's residents looking for love in the cyber-sphere.

RSVP and Oasis would not reveal how many members they have in the region.

Oasis chief Dave Heysen said finding love in regional areas could be tough but the internet helped fill the void.

"Knowing that there are single people around you within a reasonable distance is very important," he said.

RSVP marketing director Kari Taylor said dating websites and apps made finding like-minded people easier.

"Going online is just a really effective way of meeting more people than you would in a local pub."

A recent Relationships Australia-Victoria University study showed men and women looked for love online for different reasons.

Professor John Zeleznikow said web dating was a time-saver for men, while women were more likely to use the cyber sphere to find their perfect life partner.

Researchers at Victoria University's Centre for Cultural Diversity & Wellbeing discovered the divide during a survey of 120 university students.

"Men appeared to see online dating as a way to skip the pick-up lines and first-date nerves and cut to the chase, whereas women still saw those early stages of dating as a crucial part of the vetting process and were interested in knowing whether they had found the right match before pursuing physical encounters," Professor Zeleznikow said of the research which surveyed 120 people.

"Men tend to adhere to the theory of quantity, whereas women prefer quality."
