Whale numbers beef up season

AN INCREASING whale population is extending the season and good numbers of whales are still passing through Hervey Bay, according to Whalesong Cruises owner-skipper Jason Brigden.

“Many years ago we would have been stopped at this time of the year but as the population is increasing at about 10 per cent per annum, we now have good numbers of whales right up to and sometimes into November,” he said.

“The calves are older at this later part of the season and more active, as well as the mums being more relaxed so we have some great viewing.”

Mr Brigden said they were running out of visitors to take out before they were running out of whales.

He said earlier in the week they saw four mothers and calves and a male escort, but he did not expect the whales to be around for too much longer – perhaps a couple of weeks.
