Severe thunderstorms have the possibility of smashing the Sunshine Coast after intense rainfall flooded parts of the southeast overnight.

The weather bureau was busy tracking two "very dangerous" thunderstorms on Monday evening as a warning was issued for the Coast.

Meteorologist Rosa Hoff said a trough moving from western Queensland towards the region was expected to deliver another drenching on Tuesday, bringing the possibility of storms.

"We are expecting rainfall amounts to be below 20mm, but we do have the possibility of seeing some severe storm development in the region which could bring higher totals," she said.

"We do continue to have the possibility of some severe storm development in the area, so we could see rainfall totals of the same magnitude again today, with the chance of even seeing some isolated higher totals in there as well."

It comes after Monday's wet weather dumped about 120mm of rain at Alexandra Hill, southeast of Brisbane, in an hour.

Ms Hoff said the rain had been "fairly off and on" already through the early hours of this morning, but the possibility of thunderstorms would come later.

"Our best chance of seeing any storm development would be later this afternoon," she said.

The weather bureau has issued a strong wind warning for the region on Wednesday as residents are urged to rethink entering Sunshine Coast waters.

"It's just in response to a southerly surge which is moving up the coast, and will arrive in the region tomorrow," Ms Hoff said.

Maleny will reach a cool 25C on Tuesday, while Maroochydore, Nambour and Noosa Heads sit at 27C and Caloundra at 28C.
