FOR most of the country, the retirement of Warren Truss has people watching the ballot to see who will become the next leader of the Nationals party.
It seems likely at time of writing that Barnaby Joyce will run unopposed - an easy solution, if it occurs.
For Maryborough, the more pressing question is, who will be in the running to be the next Member for Wide Bay?
There does not seem to be an obvious candidate for Nationals pre-selection, suggesting there might be an interesting race in the next federal election.
Truss, while not one to shout about his achievements, has always been a popular leader in Maryborough, and the Wide Bay has been considered a "very safe" LNP seat.
At the last election he retained 63% of the vote, against Labor's Lucy Stanton with 36.8%.
Despite what happened with the state election, I am not convinced Labor will get over the line for the federal seat.
But with an election due to happen at some point this year, I don't see any contenders I'd be willing to bet my house on.
This time around, the seat may well go to a dark horse.
