Wide Bay embraces policy to help people escape violence
BUNDABERG White Ribbon ambassador Rod Meddew and lawyer Michael Waters have developed a workplace policy to help support employees experiencing domestic violence.
The policy will be offered free to all businesses in the Wide Bay region.
Janelle Gerry, director of Macadamias Australia and Farmfresh Fine Foods, has elected to implement the policy within the workplace.
Ms Gerry said it is an issue that largely goes unnoticed in the workplace but the effects of domestic violence can be devastating.
"The policy is a small step in the right direction that we as employers can take to support the White Ribbon campaign," Ms Gerry said.
"I encourage all employers to investigate this and consider implementing it."
Mr Waters of MRH Lawyers prepared the policy for the White Ribbon Australia Bundaberg ambassadors and plans to make it available to businesses throughout Wide Bay who recognise the importance of the issue.
"Ordinarily there are a lot of hurdles for an employer to overcome to implement a policy like this," Mr Waters said.
"The policy that we have prepared allows an employer to simply adopt it and make it part of the workplace culture."
Mr Meddew, a White Ribbon ambassador and chair of the Bundaberg Business Enterprise Centre, said the move was good news.
"The idea of a workplace policy that can be easily implemented by businesses without charge and that supports employees experiencing domestic violence, is very appealing," he said.
Peter Peterson, the chief executive officer of Bundaberg Business Enterprise Centre, said he expected many of the clients of his organisation would be interested in the concept and that the Bundaberg Business Enterprise Centre is looking to implement the policy.
