Wide Bay wins opening two games at state football titles

UPDATE: Wide Bay's boys team has two wins from its first two games at the Queensland School Sport 10-12yrs Football Championships campaign.

The team, comprised of players from Gympie, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg and South Burnett, thumped North West 9-0 in the opening match of the four-day program.

Wide Bay regrouped for its clash with Met West, and its 3-1 win over the city team proved the region's footballers could be in with a good chance at overall success.

Coach Troy Rober't said his team kept its structure throughout the clash with Met West, passing its first test with flying colours.

"They kept the structure and the short passing system we've worked on," Rober't said.

Rober't said the teams' tight defence and support in both attack and defence helped secure victory.

Wide Bay will face two major challenges when it takes on Met East and South Coast.

The side must win at least one of its remaining three games to qualify for the top six, with Friday's challenging schedule an early test.

EARLIER: WIDE Bay's boys enjoyed a winning start to its Queensland School Sport 10-12yrs Football Championships campaign.

The team, comprised of players from Gympie, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg and South Burnett, thumped North West 9-0 in the opening match of the four-day program.

Wide Bay, coached by Troy Rober't, produced an impressive fluidity in its game against one of the furthest-travelling teams at the state-wide competition.

"It was a good start against a regional team," Rober't said.

"We do have some harder games coming up against the metro teams but it was good for them to get that rhythm in the first game."

Wide Bay found the net nine times despite multiple positional and personnel changes.

Rober't said the squad endured three training days and a two-day training camp before the competition began, and the lessons learned on the training paddock directly translated to the field.

"Definitely. Directional changes, diagonal balls, lots of short passes," Rober't said.

"And obviously they put themselves in position to score.

"Once we play that first city team we'll get a better gauge of where we sit."
