Wide Bay team confident

WIDE Bay coach Mark Cassidy is banking on speed to combat size when they tackle Rockhampton in their opening match of the Central Queensland Rugby Championships.

Nine Fraser Coast Mariners players have been named to play for Wide Bay in today's representative clash in Rockhampton, including exciting young backs Scott Carter-Lowe, Kale Hendle and Chris Wicks.

After Wide Bay finished with just one win from three games last year, Cassidy has given his young guns a licence to thrill at every opportunity.

"I think we've got a pretty exciting backline and I think they will play with an open mind and some entertaining footy," he said.

"Rocky pride themselves on defence, which is a big part of their game. "But last year, we scored more points against them than any other team and that's what I'll be hoping we can achieve again."

Among the other Mariners players to run out for Wide Bay are Tom Hewitt, Michael Dunn and Dan Jacobsen, who will be a prominent part of the forward pack.

This is Cassidy's third year in charge and despite having just two training sessions with his squad, he was confident they would rise to the challenge.

"It is a completely different team than what we've had in the past and in a sense we're still developing but we give ourselves every chance of winning," he said.

"In the end it is all about attitude.

"We've got to come out with a positive attitude and just take everything the other teams throw at us and take every opportunity that comes our way."
