Coast woman charged for allegedly punching officer

A 25-YEAR-OLD Birtinya woman has been charged for allegedly punching a woman police officer in the head during an early morning incident in Ocean St.

Police will allege the woman was with a 28-year-old Birtinya man who police were trying to get into a taxi about 3.40am on Sunday.

The man had allegedly been directed by police to move out of the Maroochydore night life precinct in the lead up to the incident.

A police spokesman said the man was being arrested when the woman allegedly punched a 39-year-old woman officer in the head.

It will be alleged the woman then punched a man officer in the head as well.

The woman officer sustained bruising to her head.

The man officer was uninjured.

Officers charged the woman with assaulting or obstructing police while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, serious assault of police causing bodily harm and serious assault of police.

The man was also charged with assaulting or obstructing police while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance as well as causing a public nuisance and contravening a police direction.

Both of them are due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on May 12.
