Woman found under bridge after big race day

A WOMAN suffering life-threatening injuries, after she was found under a bridge along the highway at Earlville, may have been trying to walk to the city after Cairns Cup day.

Police were yesterday trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the 36-year-old Cairns woman remaining in a critical condition in Cairns Hospital yesterday with head injuries.

The woman was found by a member of the public about 9pm on Saturday in a drain at the bottom of the bridge over Clarkes Creek on the Bruce Highway, outside Stockland shopping centre.

Police established a forensic crime scene late Saturday, to find out whether the woman had accidentally fallen into the drain, or had been assaulted.

The woman was wearing a white, pink and purple floral dress and a large pink racing-style hat with features, and white high-heeled shoes.
