Meringandan woman, 74, killed in high-impact crash
UPDATE 4.20PM: A 74-year-old Meringandan woman has become the fourth person killed in what has been a horror week on Darling Downs roads.
Emergency services were called to a heavy collision between a white sedan and a black ute at the intersection of the Kingsthorpe Haden Rd and Kelvinhaugh Yalangur Rd, between Kingsthorpe and Goombungee, at 12.11pm today.
They arrived to find the 81-year-old male driver of the sedan trapped.
The 74-year-old woman in the passenger seat had died of her injuries.
The driver's door was removed from the sedan to free the man before he was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with what a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman described as relatively minor injuries.
A 27-year-old Toowoomba woman, who was driving the ute, sustained injuries to her arm and was taken to Oakey Hospital for treatment.
Darling Downs district officer Inspector Mike Curtin said the ute had been travelling south on the Kingsthorpe Haden Rd and the sedan was travelling east on the Kelvinhaugh Yallangur Rd.
He said 53 people had died in the southern region police district this year, with 16 of those in the Darling Downs region.
Four of those Darling Downs deaths have occurred since Monday.
"If we can just impress upon the motoring community that unless there is greater care and adherence to traffic signs and other road safety messages that we will continue to see more deaths on our roads," Insp. Curtin said.
"Three of the four deaths this week, unfortunately, involve a lack of concentration of drivers of vehicles at intersections.
"We are imploring the entire community, including motorists, to come to grips with the fact lives are being wasted on our roads and we must all take steps to ensure this stops."
FRIDAY 1PM: A woman has been killed in a "high impact" two-vehicle crash west of Meringandan about 12.30pm today.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Kingsthorpe-Haden Rd and Kelvinhaugh-Yalangur Rd at Yalangur.
Scenes of crime have been called to the crash.
Another woman is being treated for shoulder and arm injuries.
