Woman plucked from crumbling cliff by volunteers

UPDATE 1.40pm: A volunteer rescue squad has managed to pluck a woman stranded on a crumbling Cape Byron cliff face to safety.

A team of seven from the Brunswick Valley Volunteer Rescue Association was tasked to the cliff about 150m south of the Cape Byron Lighthouse just after noon.

Its understood the woman was hanging on to a rock ledge about 45m above the water.

Using ropes and harnesses, they were able to make their way down to the woman.

Working with police, paramedics, and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, they managed to pull her to safety in about 35 minutes.

Susan Biggar from the Brunswick Valley VRA said the woman had attempted to walk up the Cape from Tallow Beach but become stuck when she walked into a crumbling, shaly area about 10m from the top of the cliff.

While the woman was close to the top, she felt she couldn't move safely.

"She was scared that if she moved she'd fall down the cliff face into the water," Ms Biggar said.

Fortunately the local woman, who is believed to from Byron Bay, had her mobile at hand.

"She did the right thing, she put the call in and hence she could be rescued," Ms Biggar said.

The woman was apparently "very happy" to be back on safe ground.
