Work planned for the Gables and Gatakers boat ramps
MAINTENANCE, repair and removal works are set to take place on numerous boat ramps on the Fraser Coast.
Councillor for infrastructure and planning Trevor McDonald said the Gables, and both the new and old Gatakers ramps were in line for works.
"The outside lead pole at the Gables was broken in the Australia Day weather event and the matter was not addressed as boating conditions had not been favourable," he said.
"Now with the onset of the winter whiting season and better weather for boating, the matter is being addressed by council."
Cr McDonald said the leads were originally constructed by community members and a significant group of boaties continue to use this ramp to avoid the busy new ramp at Gatakers Bay.
As for the Gatakers ramp, Cr McDonald said Marine Safety Queensland has advised that the leads at the entrance to the channel are to be repaired and replaced on the very low tides in June.
"This work involves digging and concreting support beams into the rock," he said.
"Council has been advised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads that a revised plan for dealing with the erosion at the head of the ramp will see quarry rock used to construct a small wall from the top of the ramp to the line of dredged rock on the western side of the channel.
"Originally, erosion protection was to be provided by a wall constructed of geotechnical bags which were to run parallel to the ramp. The new plan will be a more economical response to the issue that has plagued the ramp since its construction in 2009."
Cr McDonald said TMR had also advised council to lodge a funding request for the complete removal of the old Gatakers ramp which no longer serves the boating public.
He said the ramp acts as a groyne that holds sand on the eastern side and worsens erosion to the west, once removed, it will allow the beach to stabilise so council can then replace coastal infrastructure such as fences and beach access stairs.
He said there are 38 boat ramp lanes in the Hervey Bay region of the Fraser Coast.
