WRONG PLACE: Family believes missing yachtsman in Qld waters

THE GYMPIE niece of missing Hervey Bay sailor Keith Jones says the family is looking for closure.

"He is almost certainly deceased," Annette Keast-Jones said yesterday.

But she says finding his body is still important for his family.

She believes authorities are looking in the wrong place.

Ms Annette Keast-Jones says her uncle's body may well be somewhere between the inside of Fraser Island and the ocean side at Double Island Point.

She said the yacht Wayfarer that has been found near Yamba on the NSW North Coast, was effectively able to sail itself there without human intervention.

He was probably headed to visit family in Newcastle, she said.

"We believe the navigation system Keith had was an advanced one and would be able to make the Newcastle trip without Keith having to adjust it after he left Hervey Bay.

"He had emphysema and bad knees and if he was overcome by a coughing fit he could have been swept overboard.

"All the people who reported seeing Wayfarer over the past week say it appeared to be abandoned."

Ms Keast-Jones said Mr Jones's family was grateful for all the rescue personnel and public who spent three days looking for him.

"But we need to concentrate on Queensland beaches and creeks. If anyone is around the waterways this weekend, please keep your eyes out."
