Xavier and St Mary’s teachers to strike during school hours
SCHOOL teachers at Xavier Catholic College and St Mary's Catholic Primary School will strike during school hours tomorrow.
The strike will take place Thursday October 22, between 11am and 1pm.
Both Xavier and St Mary's Catholic Primary are two of 177 Catholic schools across Queensland which will be affected by the "work stop".
The strike has been organised by the Independent Education Union Australia - Queensland and Northern Territory branch.
IEUA-QNT branch secretary Terry Burke said union affiliated teachers and other school staff would not work between 11am and 1pm, which includes scheduled class time.
"Taking protected action during school time is a last resort for employees but the untenable position of Queensland Catholic school employers when it comes to workload and wages has left them no choice," he said.
But Queensland Catholic Education Commission executive director Dr Lee-Anne Perry is not concerned about any disruptions.
"The action is not expected to cause major changes to the running of the school day at participating schools," she said.
"...each school will communicate closely with families as necessary."
But Mr Burke said school authorities would not know how many teachers are to participate in the strike.
He said employees are not required to inform their employers of their protected action intentions under the Industrial Act.
