Xavier schoolchildren welcome the whales in a beach ceremony

MORE than 40 children from Xavier Catholic College are welcoming the whales with a ceremony at Scarness beach on Friday morning.

The event is part of a statewide ceremony to officially mark the start of whale watching season in Queensland and celebrate National Whale Day on June 1.

A college spokeswoman said the ritual included the children performing a unique and colourful dance created especially for the occasion.

She said the ceremony would be performed simultaneously by hundreds of children statewide at events all along the Queensland coast from the Gold Coast to the Whitsundays.
