Yacht stays here a year

A YACHT that sits stranded in mangroves at River Heads remains where it washed up almost a year ago.

Resting on its side just south of the boat ramp, the yacht is lost among vegetation behind houses on the south head.

Acting Sergeant Peter Upton of the Hervey Bay Water Police said it was washed up in king tides and that the Brisbane-based owners simply had not moved it.

“It went up there last year,” Acting Sgt Upton said.

“It washed up on one of those big king tides that had a cyclonic wind behind it.

“The owners were trying to get it out but they couldn’t.”

He said the yacht had been sitting there for almost 12 months and that he planned to call the owners again to remind them.

As no laws were being broken by leaving it there, the owners could not be forced to move it, he said.
