Bud Kaeding coming to Tinana

MARYBOROUGH Speedway general manager Ryan Harris thought all his surprises had arrived on Christmas Day.

He was wrong – he got a huge one when he answered his mobile phone yesterday.

American superstar Bud Kaeding ensured that when he spoke to Harris.

Kaeding, the current American Silver Crown champion, is a surprise late nomination for this weekend’s round four of the Mighty Midgets National Speedcar Super Series at the Tinana track.

No wonder Harris, who is also the trackside race commentator, is feeling excited.

“It isn’t often that one of the best speedcar drivers in the world rings you up and says he’s coming to race here,” Harris said.

“Kaeding is an absolute legend and a multiple American champion – there is no doubt that he’ll be one of the finest wingless drivers ever to grace our shores.

“We’re so lucky to have someone of his calibre come and race here.”

But how did the 30-year-old Californian come to be racing in Australia?

“Well, he’s in Brisbane racing V8 Sprintcars for the international season and he was asked by the owner of the Q91Midget car if he’d like to drive up here because the regular driver couldn’t,” Harris said.

“It just happened that he had a spare night and he could do it.”

However, Harris said due to Kaeding’s Sprintcar commitments in Brisbane, he’ll miss tonight’s first round of heats.

“Because he won’t race tonight, that will mean he’ll start Saturday’s heats at the back of the field,” Harris said.

“Saying that, you don’t become an American Champion without being able to pass cars.”

Kaeding agreed.

“I’ve had to pass more cars then that to win an “A” main feature race back home so that (starting at the back) shouldn’t be a problem,” he said before heading to Archerfield Speedway for some practice laps in the Q91 car yesterday.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”

All the action starts at 5pm today and from 4.30pm tomorrow.
